Founded in 1966, it was named in honor of British navigator Matthew Flinders, who explored and surveyed the Australian and South Australian coastline in the early 19th century. The 2021 Times Higher Education ranking of the world's top universities places Flinders in the 251 – 300th bracket, at 266 in the world.
